Helpful context

How the SWP calculator works

A systematic withdrawal plan draws a regular monthly amount from an invested corpus. The SWP Calculator estimates total withdrawals, the remaining balance and whether the corpus lasts for the selected period. It is useful for exploring how withdrawal size, time and an assumed return interact.

For each month, the calculator first applies the assumed monthly return to the current balance and then deducts the planned withdrawal. This process repeats until the selected period ends or the balance reaches zero. Real investment returns do not arrive evenly each month, so the order of gains and losses can affect actual outcomes.

For example, starting with Rs 10 lakh, withdrawing Rs 10,000 per month for 10 years and assuming an 8% annual return leaves an estimated balance of about Rs 3.90 lakh after total withdrawals of Rs 12 lakh. This is an illustration; taxes, costs and changing returns are not included.

Testing a higher withdrawal and a lower return helps show whether the planned income may place too much pressure on the corpus.

Frequently asked questions

Can an SWP corpus run out?
Yes. If withdrawals and costs exceed the growth of the corpus, the balance may be depleted before the selected period ends.
Does the calculator model changing market returns?
No. It uses one constant assumed return, while actual returns may vary and occur in an unfavourable sequence.
Are taxes included in the withdrawal estimate?
No. Tax treatment depends on the investment and individual circumstances and is outside this simplified calculation.
