Helpful context
How the EMI calculator works
An equated monthly instalment is the fixed payment used to repay a loan over an agreed tenure. The EMI Calculator uses the principal, annual interest rate and number of years to estimate the monthly instalment, total repayment and total interest. It helps compare affordability before taking on a liability.
The formula converts the annual interest rate into a monthly rate and spreads principal and interest across the total number of monthly payments. Early instalments generally contain a larger interest component, while later instalments repay more principal. A longer tenure may reduce the monthly payment but can increase total interest paid.
For example, a Rs 10 lakh loan at 9% annual interest for 5 years produces an estimated EMI of about Rs 20,758. Across 60 instalments, the estimated total interest is about Rs 2.46 lakh. Lender fees, rate changes, insurance and prepayments are not included.
Before comparing offers, try the same principal with several rates and tenures. This shows the trade-off between monthly affordability and the total amount repaid over the full loan term for informed comparison.
