How the SIP calculator works
A systematic investment plan invests a fixed amount at regular monthly intervals. The SIP Calculator estimates the value of those contributions after a selected number of years using an assumed annual return. It also separates the amount contributed from the estimated growth, making the effect of time and compounding easier to see.
The calculation converts the annual return to a monthly rate and applies it across the total number of monthly contributions. It treats each contribution as being made at the beginning of a period. A longer timeline gives earlier contributions more time to compound, while a higher monthly amount increases the invested principal. The assumed return is only an input, not a promised outcome.
For example, investing Rs 10,000 each month for 10 years at an assumed annual return of 12% produces an estimated value of about Rs 23.23 lakh. The total amount invested is Rs 12 lakh, and the remaining amount is estimated growth. Actual returns, costs and taxes may change the result.
Frequently asked questions
- What return should I enter in the SIP Calculator?
- Use a reasonable assumption for scenario planning and compare more than one rate. The entered rate is not a forecast or guaranteed return.
- Does the calculator include taxes or investment costs?
- No. It shows a simplified estimate from the entered contribution, return and period, without personal taxes or product-specific costs.
- Why does a longer SIP period change the result so much?
- Earlier contributions have more monthly periods in which estimated gains can compound, so time can materially affect the projected value.
