How the income tax calculator works
The Income Tax Calculator compares a simplified estimate under India's old and new tax regimes for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26). It uses annual income and entered deductions, applies the relevant standard deduction and slab rates, checks the applicable rebate threshold and adds 4% cess.
Under the calculator's rules, the new regime uses a Rs 75,000 standard deduction and a rebate up to Rs 7 lakh of taxable income. The old regime uses a Rs 50,000 standard deduction, the deductions entered by the user and a rebate up to Rs 5 lakh. Surcharge and other individual adjustments are not included.
For example, annual income of Rs 10 lakh with Rs 1.5 lakh of entered deductions produces estimated total tax of Rs 44,200 under the new regime and Rs 75,400 under the old regime in this simplified calculation. Tax rules can change, and individual treatment should be confirmed before filing.
Use current income and eligible deductions, then review the result whenever tax rules or personal circumstances change.
