How the retirement calculator works
The Retirement Calculator estimates future monthly expenses, the corpus needed at retirement and the monthly SIP required before retirement. It uses current age, retirement age, current expenses, inflation, expected returns before and after retirement, and life expectancy. Each assumption has a meaningful effect on the result.
First, current expenses are increased by the inflation assumption for the years remaining until retirement. The calculator then estimates a corpus that can support those expenses during retirement using a return adjusted for inflation. Finally, it works backwards to estimate the monthly contribution needed before retirement.
For example, a person aged 35 who plans to retire at 60, spends Rs 50,000 monthly, assumes 6% inflation, 10% before retirement and 7% after retirement, and plans to age 85 receives an estimated retirement expense of about Rs 2.15 lakh monthly, a corpus near Rs 5.71 crore and a SIP near Rs 42,687. These are illustrative assumptions, not guaranteed outcomes.
Comparing conservative assumptions can help identify a practical savings range and show which inputs have the greatest effect on the estimate.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is inflation included in retirement planning?
- Inflation can increase the future cost of the same lifestyle, so today's monthly expense must be projected to the retirement date.
- What is the post-retirement return used for?
- It estimates how the remaining corpus may continue to earn while withdrawals fund expenses during retirement.
- Should the estimate be reviewed over time?
- Yes. Expenses, income, retirement age and return assumptions can change, so the calculation should be updated periodically.
